It costs to preheat the oven

Most things you bake don't really need a preheated oven. Save money and time by putting the food into a cold oven, then turning it on. Allow a little extra time, as the food cooks more slowly during the warming up period. (Not recommended for cookies or angel food cakes.)

Keep your drink hot for free

If you like to drink coffee or tea over a period of a few hours, make a pot of either and put it in a thermos. You won't have to pay for electricity to keep it hot (as in a coffee pot) or keep going back to make more (as in cups of tea.)

Be kind to your clothes

Sometimes clothes can get by with a good airing out instead of being washed. This will save wear and tear on the clothes as well as water, detergent and electricity to wash them.

Old fashioned savings

Have an "old fashioned" night with the family. Turn off the lights and use candles or oil lamps. Take turns reading a book or telling stories or play board games instead of watching TV or playing on the computer. Cook a homestyle meal, wash dishes by hand in a dishpan or large bowl. At the very least, you'll save on electricity; you may save on food and water, too.

Leaking Electricity

TVs, microwaves, computers and anything else that has a clock or light that stays on (or an "instant on" feature) still use energy when they're turned off, so unplug them when not in use. If that isn't convenient, put them on a power strip and turn that off when you're not using the appliances.
